    Paver Contractor in Scottsdale, AZ

Stone Creations is based in Scottsdale, on Miller Road near Old Town, and John Traynor has been installing pavers here since he founded the company in April 2000. For paver work, Scottsdale is really three places: older ranch homes in the south, master-planned neighborhoods in the middle, and desert foothill lots up north. Each one needs its own plan.

What paver work looks like across Scottsdale

South Scottsdale and Old Town. A lot of these homes were built in the 1950s through the 1970s, and many still have their original poured concrete driveways and patios. By now that concrete is usually cracked, stained or sunk at the garage. These jobs almost always start with tear-out: we break up the old concrete and haul it off, fix the grade, and build a real base before a single paver goes down.

McCormick Ranch, Gainey Ranch and central Scottsdale. These are established master-planned neighborhoods with HOAs and architectural review, so expect to get your paver and color approved before work starts. We handle the paperwork side: samples, a layout drawing, and the exact product names the committee wants to see. Pool deck remodels come up a lot here, because much of the original concrete around these pools is cracking.

North Scottsdale. DC Ranch, Grayhawk, Troon, Silverleaf and the foothills mean bigger lots, motor courts, long driveways, and more natural stone, travertine and porcelain. The ground is different too. You hit rock and caliche fast, lots slope, and desert washes carry a lot of water during monsoon storms. Much of north Scottsdale also falls under the city's Environmentally Sensitive Lands rules, which can limit how much of a lot gets disturbed, so the hardscape layout has to be planned around that from the start.

    The ground under Scottsdale pavers

Caliche is the big one. It's a hard, cemented layer that can sit anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down, and water doesn't drain through it. If water gets into the base and has nowhere to go, it sits there, and the pavers above it eventually move. Where we hit caliche, we plan the grade so water sheds off the top and drains out of the base instead of hoping it soaks in.

Under every driveway goes a 4-inch layer of ABC that we wet and compact in lifts. That base is the same whether it's a 1960s ranch house in south Scottsdale or a new build in the foothills. What changes from one part of town to the other is the dig, the drainage plan, and how much rock has to come out of the ground first.

    What pavers cost in Scottsdale

The ranges below are typical installed totals, taken from John's current pricing. Your exact number depends on size and site, and you get it once we've measured.

    • Paver driveway: most run $5,000 to $10,000 for a typical two-car driveway of about 550 to 900 square feet. Removing an old concrete driveway adds about $1,400 to $2,700. Tumbled pavers add about $500 to $900, and a contrasting border adds a few hundred dollars. Herringbone, basketweave and other patterns cost the same.
    • Paver patio: most concrete paver patios run $2,500 to $6,600 for about 300 to 600 square feet. The same patio runs about $4,500 to $10,800 in natural stone or travertine and $5,700 to $13,200 in porcelain.
    • Pool deck: a typical deck with coping runs about $7,000 to $13,400 in concrete pavers and $11,000 to $21,000 in natural stone or travertine.
    • Walkway: most run $850 to $2,750 in concrete pavers. The minimum job is $800.
