Fountain Hills walkways do a lot of climbing. The path from the driveway to the front door often includes steps, side yards run along a slope, and the backyard path may drop toward the pool or the view. On terrain like this, even risers and a flat, trip-free surface matter as much as the look of the paver.
How much a Fountain Hills paver walkway costs
Walkways usually measure 100 to 250 square feet, and at that size the installed totals are:
- Concrete pavers: $850 to $2,750
- Natural stone or travertine: $1,500 to $4,500
- Porcelain: $1,900 to $5,500
The minimum job is $800. Steps, borders and old concrete removal get priced when we measure. (Side note: concrete paver walkways come to roughly $8.50 to $11 per square foot at typical sizes.)
Here's a worked example. A side-yard path 3.5 feet wide and 40 feet long is 140 square feet. In concrete pavers, that's about $1,200 to $1,550. Steps that are all the same height
On a slope, a walkway is really a set of stairs with landings. Risers that vary by even a little are what people catch a toe on, especially at night. We set every riser to the same height, make the landings deep enough to stop on, and finish the step edges cleanly. Fountain Hills skews older, with a median age of 60.8 in the 2020 census, so it's worth building for the next twenty years too. That means wider paths, a gentle slope instead of a single odd step where the grade allows it, and no lips where the walk meets the driveway or the patio.
Side yards and runoff
On a hillside lot, the side yard takes water from the roof and from the lot uphill. A walkway there can turn into a channel in a monsoon storm if nobody plans for it. We grade the walk so water crosses it and keeps going, or runs along a planned edge, instead of running down the middle of the path.
Under the path, it's the usual Fountain Hills mix of DG on top and granite or caliche below. The DG comes out, and the path goes back in on a compacted base with screeded bedding sand. Edge restraint runs along both sides, and joint sand is swept in last. On a slope, those edges do most of the work of keeping a narrow path's lines straight.
Lighting the path
Path and step lights make a sloped walk a lot safer after dark. Under the Town's dark sky code, outdoor fixtures are capped at 3000K and brighter ones need shielding, so pick low, warm lights aimed at the walking surface. The wire needs to be in the ground before the walk is paved.
