Pavers Are Built to Drain
One of the biggest differences between a paver surface and a poured slab is what happens when it rains. Pavers are designed so water can drain down through the joints between the stones. It does not sit on top. It moves down into the base material below, and that base material matters a lot.
If you get the base wrong, all that water has nowhere to go. That is when you see pooling, settling, and pavers that start to shift a year or two after the job looked perfect.
Why ABC Is the Right Base
We use ABC, which is aggregate base course. It is a crushed rock mix with fines in it, and when you compact it, it looks almost solid. A lot of people see that dense, hard surface and assume water cannot get through it. It can.
ABC drains. Even compacted, water moves down through it and out. So when rain hits your driveway or patio, the water goes through the paver joints, down into the ABC, and keeps moving. You are not getting any build-up of water sitting under your pavers.
The Problem with Wet Quarter Minus
Some installers use quarter minus, and worse, they install it wet. Quarter minus holds water. It does not drain the way ABC does. So now you have water trapped in your base layer with no way out, and that trapped water is what causes pavers to sink, heave, and separate over time.
It looks fine on day one. The problems show up later, and by then the installer is long gone. This is one of those details you will never see in the finished photos, but it decides whether your project lasts five years or thirty.
What This Means for Your Project
In Arizona we get long dry stretches and then monsoon storms that dump a lot of water fast. Your hardscape has to handle both. A paver system over a properly compacted ABC base does exactly that. The water flows, the water gets out, and the base stays stable.
When you are comparing bids, ask what base material is being used and how thick it will be. If someone is using quarter minus to save a few dollars, that savings is coming out of the life of your project.
