Plenty of Surprise homes were built without a pool, so many decks here go in around a pool added years after the house. Others replace a concrete deck that has started to crack and stain. Either way, the deck has to work on a flat lot that was graded to drain a certain way, and in Marley Park, Asante or Sun City Grand the HOA will want a look first.

Surprise pool decks we quote usually run 600 to 1,000 square feet, plus a coping run of 90 to 95 linear feet along the pool edge. Installed prices by material:

Decks around new pools
If you're adding a pool, bring us in before the pool goes in, not after. The coping, the deck height at the back door and the fall of the deck all have to line up, and they're easiest to settle while the yard is still open.
It's also the time to build in the small stuff. Umbrella sleeves set flush in the deck give you shade without a weighted stand, and hide lids let pavers sit on the skimmer lid so it disappears into the pattern. Adding either one to a finished deck means cutting and patching. Umbrella sleeves, hide lids and other features to plan in.
If a pool builder already poured a concrete deck and it's cracking, that's the tear-out line above. It comes out, the grade gets checked, and a new base goes under the coping and pavers.
Water and heat on a flat Surprise lot
Surprise sits on flat former farmland, and caliche under it doesn't drain. A pool deck gets splash-out, backwash and monsoon rain, and all of that has to leave the surface. On a flat lot the deck can't count on gravity alone, so we build in a gentle fall that carries water off the deck, clear of the pool and the house, toward the side yards where the lot was graded to drain.

Pick the color with bare feet in mind. Light concrete pavers and light travertine stay cooler than dark colors, and on a deck that takes full afternoon sun, that's the difference you'll feel every summer.
HOA review in master-planned Surprise
Marley Park, Asante and Sun City Grand all have HOAs, and a pool deck is a big visible change. Sun City Grand homes date back to 1996, so the oldest original decks there have been through about 30 summers. If yours is cracking, the HOA submittal and the tear-out can be handled together in one plan. Expect to submit the material and color. We give you both in writing, and the deck doesn't go on the schedule until we know what the HOA and the city need.
